
Weber state university symphony orchestra and choir concert
The Estepona Auditorium hosts a concert by the Weber State University Symphony Orchestra and Choir, conducted by Francisco de Gálvez.
It will take place on Friday, May 2, at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, subject to availability. An invitation must be picked up at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center.
Estepona City Council announces that the Weber State University Symphony Orchestra and Choir (USA) will perform a concert in Estepona under the baton of its principal conductor, Francisco de Gálvez. The concert will take place next Friday, May 2, at 8:30 p.m., in the Felipe VI Auditorium.
The concert, organized by the Department of Culture of the Málaga Provincial Council, in collaboration with Estepona City Council, will begin with Hoe-Down from Aaron Copland's ballet Rodeo and a selection of choral repertoire conducted by Dalan Guthrie. It will continue with a performance of Beethoven's Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C major, Op. 56, conducted by Francisco de Gálvez, with soloists Shi-Hwa Wang, violinist; César Jiménez, cello; and Yu-Jane Yang, piano.
Free admission, with invitations available upon request at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center, starting today, Monday, April 21.

Born in Málaga, Francisco de Gálvez is one of the most distinguished Spanish conductors of his generation. Since winning First Prize and the Gold Medal at the Tokyo International Conducting Competition (Min-On) in 1994, among 194 conductors from 36 countries, he has maintained a distinguished international career. A cum laude doctor in Music and Communication from the University of Málaga, Francisco de Gálvez is Director of Orchestral Studies at Weber State University in Utah, USA. He is also very active as a guest conductor on the national and international scene, conducting orchestras such as the Spanish National Orchestra, Utah Symphony, New American Philharmonic, Berliner Symphoniker, Zagreb Philharmonic, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Osaka Philharmonic, Tokyo City Philharmonic, Filarmonica di Russe Orchestra, Potsdam Philharmonic, Flemish Opera Orchestra, Sofia Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Teplice Philharmonic Orchestra, Bellevue Philharmonic, Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra, Malaga Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, Madrid Symphony and Community Orchestras, Granada Symphony Orchestra, Seville Symphony Orchestra, Córdoba Orchestra, and Extremadura Orchestra, among others.
He has performed in prestigious concert halls around the world and was principal conductor of the Málaga Symphony Orchestra and the University of Málaga Chamber Orchestra between 1998 and 2011. Artistic Director of the Contemporary Music Series organized by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra between 1995 and 2000, he was principal conductor and founder of the Montreal Chamber Players orchestra in 1991. With this orchestra he recorded his first compact disc, which has been followed by others, as well as numerous recordings for radio and television.
He completed studies in Composition, Orchestration, and Analysis, among other subjects, graduating with the highest degree in Orchestral Conducting from McGill University in Montreal. He also has extensive training and experience as a violinist (Advanced Diploma, Madrid; Performing Diploma, Royal College of Music, London; Master's Degree, McGill University, Montreal). He resides with his family in the United States, where he works as Director of Orchestral Studies at Weber State University and pursues an intense program of teaching and artistic activities.
Shi-Hwa
Violinist
Shi-Hwa Wang's reputation as a violinist has earned him concertmaster positions with several professional orchestras, including the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan, the Ballet West and Utah Chamber Orchestras in Salt Lake City, and the Classical Music Festival Orchestra of Eisenstadt, Austria, with which he works each summer. A dedicated chamber music enthusiast, he is a founding member of the Formosan Violin-Piano Duo, the Wasatch Piano Trio, the Browning String Quartet, and the Kismarton String Quartet.
As an educator, he is a professor of violin at Weber State University. He has served as a teacher and judge in national and international courses and competitions. A graduate of Soochow University in Taiwan, Wang studied violin with Cheu-Sen Chen. He earned his Master of Arts and Doctorate of Arts degrees from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) with his professors Yuri Mazurkevich, Catherine Tate, and Peter Schaffer. A sought-after musician, Wang has frequently appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, and guest concertmaster in the United States, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Canada, and Europe.
César Jiménez
Cello
A native of Ávila, she has a wealth of concert experience, including appearances with orchestras such as the Málaga Symphony Orchestra, the UMA Chamber Orchestra, the Ciudad de Priego Orchestra, and the Ciudad de Melilla Symphony Orchestra, among others. She has premiered numerous compositions, including "Evocación for Cello and Piano" by José García Román; "Sonata for Cello and Piano" by Ramón Roldán; and "Elegía Estival" for cello and orchestra by José Carra. Her notable recordings include "Falla-Cassadó, Music for Cello and Piano" with pianist Juan Antonio Higuero; "Suite for Cello and 3djazz" by Claude Bolling (2012) with the Cello4qt ensemble; and "Aprés un Revê" (2016) with pianist Rafael Porras. She lives in Málaga and shares her concert career with teaching at the Manuel Carra Professional Music Conservatory.
Yu-Jane Yang
Piano
Dr. Yu-Jane Yang is a Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor and Director of Piano Studies at Weber State University. She received the prestigious national Teacher of the Year Award from the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) in 2020, was inducted into the New York Steinway Teachers Hall of Fame (2021), received the Top Steinway Teacher Award (2022), and was named an MTNA Foundation Fellow (2011). Most recently, she received the prestigious 2023 Utah Governor's Mansion Artist Award, presented by Governor Spencer Cox in September 2023.
Highly sought after as a presenter, performer, and masterclass teacher, Yu-Jane has given numerous piano workshops, masterclasses, and concerts in Austria, Poland, Norway, Spain, Italy, Germany, Singapore, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Canada, and the United States. She also frequently judges national and international piano competitions, including the MTNA National Competition Finals, the California and Nevada State Soloist and Concerto Competitions, the International Young Artists Piano Competition in Washington, DC, and the preliminary auditions of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.
Dalan Guthrie
Choir Director at Weber State University (USA)
Dalan Guthrie earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University and his doctorate from Michigan State University. Prior to attending Weber State University, Guthrie directed choirs and taught graduate conducting classes at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He previously taught at Salem High School, where his choirs were selected for performances at the Utah Music Educators Association (2016, 2018), Utah ACDA (2017, 2018), and ACDA Western Division conferences (2019). He is a practicing professional tenor and has appeared as a guest soloist with the Michigan State University Lansing Symphony Orchestra and is a member of professional choral ensembles throughout the United States.
